A review from PLAYBACK:Stl :Hailing from Washington, D.C., Caustic Casanova has a lot going for them in the route of catchy-as-hell songs that maintain some fresh and inventive new ideas. Their new album Break has so much packed into it, I don’t even know where to begin.

If there’s anything I do know for sure, it’s that I have to commend them for their heavy and brilliant use of the bass guitar. It’s perfectly mixed with the guitars to the point that they cooperate beautifully together through the tracks, creating some amazing solos on both ends. As mentioned before, there’s so much packed into this album, specifically in the area of tone, it’s hard to pinpoint because of the high number of mixtures on the record, going all the way from psych rock to post punk, some heavy forms of metal, and even blues. It’s amazing to hear a band that can manage to pack all of these different influences within just a single album, and in an original manner.

The lyrical content, on the other hand, is a bit on the odd side; whether it’s the song titles or the lyrics, political flavors arise that make sense within their genre. The clean style of the vocals all three members lend to the songs sometimes gets a bit louder, more abrasive, yet still fits within the songs they’ve created.

If you want to listen to something with new and interesting ideas, I recommend checking this album out

CRAZY BAG LADY, Savannah’s own brand of righteous punk noise recorded with Kylesa’s Phillip Cope a year ago. It has taken a while to get the vinyl together (pressing plants!) but they are here and they sound great on vinyl. The band, album artist and members Retro Futurist got together to hand draw 50 covers. A lot of beers were consumed and many markers were shredded in the process.

Additionally, we just received the CRAZY BAG LADY vinyl in the mail. 300 slabs of color. We’re putting those together this week. We are hand glueing the covers together and making 50 hand drawn editions by some of the band members, RF team, and the artist who did the cover for HUNKS. We will hand number all of them. In a powerful write-up of “When I’m Gone,” and Heading East as a whole, The Obelisk offers, “Dual-guitar leads from Justin Dick (also vocals) and Kristopher Maedke-Russell (also also vocals) ring through a crisp classic heavy rock dogwhistle to those clued in to the aforementioned Irish pioneers, but with the organ/key work of Corey Barhorst and the fluid rhythms of bassist Michael Redmond and drummer Lee Vallier, a song like ‘When I’m Gone’ digs into its own creative space, sounding rich but not overcooked as it meanders through an extended instrumental jam in which all five parties involved take advantage of an opportunity to shine. ‘When I’m Gone’ is one of two longer (over eight-minute) inclusions on Heading East… and as far out as it goes, it leaves room to come back to the chorus at the end, NICHE keeping songwriting at the fore even as they deliver highlight performances.

Heading East will see release through Retro Futurist on digital and CD November 13th with a vinyl pressing to follow in early 2016.

Founded in 2009 by childhood friends guitarist/vocalist Justin Dick and bassist/vocalist Michael Redmond, the band’s lineup includes Corey Barhorst on Hammond/synths (Black Tusk, ex-Kylesa), drummer Lee Vallier and guitarist/vocalist Kristopher Maedke-Russell. What began as a simple three-piece rock band, NICHE has since coalesced into a formidable quintet. Laying down ‘70s-influenced rock with Southern and psychedelic tendencies, where dual guitar solos, three part vocal harmonies, layered Hammond organ and synths and a powerful rhythm section fuse together to produce a sound that is both nostalgic and unique, hints of Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy and Steely Dan showing through in their well-crafted songs.

With two previous self-released albums under their belt — So Be It and The Other Side Of The End, which were both recorded by their good friend Chris Adams — in December 2014, NICHE went to The Jam Room in Colombia, South Carolina to record their third album with longtime friend Phillip Cope of Kylesa at the helm of producing the album, the first release with their current lineup. Titled Heading East, the album catapults six new tracks with nearly forty minutes of mega rich, perfectly hazy, psychedelically-induced classic rock fueled and jacked-up for modern times, completed with beautiful, kaleidoscopic artwork by Samantha Muljat.

Ward was admitted last Thursday evening while on tour with an unknown infection, and has been held for several days of tests and monitoring. Having dodged a pretty big bullet and following several days of treatment and observation, Jason is healing quickly and anxious to get released and back out to regroup with guitarist Cheryl Manner and bassist/vocalist Jon Case later this week, in order to play through the remaining dates with Inter Arma, Indian Handcrafts and headliners, Kylesa, which runs until October 25th.

IRATA is touring in support of their groove-laden new album, Sweet Loris, which was just released on CD and digitally this past Friday via Kylesa’s own Retro Futurist label. Recorded by the band at The Jam Room, produced by Phillip Cope and engineered by Cope and Zac Thomas, and completed with artwork by Santos and design by Phillip Yeary, with equal amounts of thunderous doom-inspired uproar as there tranquil and melodious organic rock segues, nearly forty minutes of new material is born in these seven new tracks.

New Noise Magazine rated Sweet Loris a 4/5 in their review, offering, “IRATA’s progressive-ish take on doom-y rock/metal is impressive, both in its execution (these songs are fun both despite and because of their length) and in how well they carve out their own take on the style. The band’s instrumental history is really what helps their current incarnation succeed.
